Are Propane Heaters Safe for Indoor Use?

As with any type of gas heater threes always questions regarding health and safety when they are used inside the home for a long time basis. You may or may not be aware of the many concerns government legislators and activists have brought up regarding the use of gas heaters in confined spaces, especially those that are fuelled by propane.

Issues and concerns that present in the past do not provide cause for concern in this day and age with many manufacturers integrating the latest features to insure that if you purchase a propane heater for indoor use it will bring no harm. Period.

Some of the latest features to be included in the new generation of propane heaters include oxygen depletion sensors and automatic valve cut off mechanisms. As propane fuelled heaters are inexpensive to run and the fuel source can be readily purchased from many large retailers there really is no reason to invest in one of these great heaters. For outdoor use you could purchase one of many portable variations that are not only safe for outside use but can be used in the home for a short term basis making them great value for money compared to other types available.

It’s important to remember that no matter what type of heating system you have, whether operated via natural gas or propane that you follow the safety guidelines advised by manufactures to insure you and your families safety. Larger units such as the many propane fireplaces and stoves available for purchase need careful monitoring and consistent maintenance to insure they not only last a life time but bring no harm to your health.

For a heater solution that is really efficient then perhaps one of many fan operated units would suit you best that help in radiating heat around your living area fast and efficiently or perhaps a radiant variant whereby a heating element warms the air around you which results in a slow warming of any vicinity.

Many manufactures such as Delonghi and Mr Heater include lifetime warranty with their products meaning you never have to worry about a fault developing. If you want to save cash this winter then I think it’s time you got yourself a propane heater. Think about it, it makes sense right?

Water Heaters and Thermal Expansion – Does Your Water Heater Need a Thermal Expansion Tank?

Water Heaters: Friend or Foe?

Your Water Heater is one of the most expensive and important parts of your plumbing system. Without one, life just would not be the same. Imagine cold showers every day! But did you know that your water heater could be causing a problem in your pipes?

Hot Water Expands

Hot water heaters do their job by using either an electric heating element or a gas burner to heat cold water and make it hot. The problem is that water expands when it is heated. This is called “Thermal Expansion”.

An Extra Half Gallon Of Water

Due to Thermal Expansion, a regular 40 gallon hot water heater creates about an extra half gallon of water in the pipes while heating water from 70 degrees to 120 degrees. If the extra water doesn’t have anywhere to go it causes the pressure in the pipes to go up, sometimes way up.

A Closed System Creates The Problem

If you have a “Closed System”, meaning there is a check valve or “Backflow Preventer” on the incoming water line, the extra water volume caused by thermal expansion has nowhere to go. This means that the pressure in your pipes can get too high, possibly causing problems.

Too Much Pressure Is Bad

If your pressure gets too high because of thermal expansion it can cause several problems. One of the main issues is that your T and P Relief Valve on the water heater can start to drip or run. This valve is designed to release pressure if it gets up to 150 psi. The problem is that it’s really a safety valve and isn’t designed to open and close a lot. Too much could cause it to fail.

Thermal Expansion Can Cause Running Toilets

Another symptom of thermal expansion problems is a toilet that keeps running or kicking on from time to time. This is caused by the excess pressure overcoming the float on the fill valve, allowing water to run into the tank. Over time this can cause the fill valve to stop working and make it run constantly.

A Thermal Expansion Tank Will Solve These Problems

If you are experiencing either of these problems, or if you are just replacing your water heater, it is a good idea to install a Thermal Expansion Tank. This is a small tank with an air bladder inside that is installed in the cold water pipe near the water heater. When the water heater comes on and starts heating, the extra water that is created is forced into the tank and compresses the air bladder. As the water cools, or a faucet is opened, the bladder pushes the extra water back out of the tank,

A Fairly Simple Job

Installing a Thermal Expansion Tank is a fairly simple job. You just need to turn the main water off, install a tee and female adapter in the cold water pipe near the water heater and then screw the Expansion Tank into the adapter. A few basic tools and a little knowledge and you can eliminate thermal expansion from your piping system.

Solar Window Heaters – Free Heat Wherever the Sun Shines

If you’re home during the day and own a home or rent an apartment with south facing exposure you should consider a solar window space heater.

Not only can you harness the radiant energy of the sun to heat entire rooms, but once it’s in place you’ll be getting free heat for as long as the sun shines.

If you’ve never seen a solar window heater it can be described as a 3′ x 2′ box, 4 or 5 inches deep, that fits within the window frame on the inside of the room. The front of the box, facing the sun, is covered by a sheet of Plexiglas. The back of the box is a solid sheet of plywood or sheet metal with the exception of two – five inch holes, or ports, cut out at diagonally facing corners.

The fan is housed in the port at the bottom corner, and the exhaust port is located diagonally across at the top. The fan draws air from the room into the box where it circulates through a series of baffles until it exits back into the room through the exhaust port at the top. The temperature of the air re-entering the room is around 120 -130 F (49 – 54 C). The inside of the box has two components that work together to retain and concentrate the radiant heat from the sun.

The first is a system to collect the sun’s rays at numerous angles as it moves across the sky while at the same time providing a path for the air to circulate from one end of the box to the other.

One way this done is to line the interior of the box with a sheet of aluminum or copper to conduct the heat and use wooden baffles to direct the airflow. Other methods employ aluminum tubing or even recycled soda cans as combination collector/circulators.

The second component of the collector system is the application of Hi-Temp flat black spray paint to increase the absorption of the collectors. Most, but not all indoor window heaters are thermostatically controlled. Those that don’t have a digital display that shows the temperature the collector is generating.

The only on-going cost associated with a solar space heater is the cost of electricity to run the 12V fan. Although the cost to run a 4.7″ diameter fan is minimal, you could get off the grid and operate it cost free with a 6 watt solar panel that can be purchased for around .

The price of a factory built heater is around 0, but if you enjoy a rewarding do it yourself project you could probably build one for less than 0.

How to Choose Pool Heaters

The three categories of pool heaters are gas, electric, and solar. Pools are comfortable with the water at a temperature of about 78 degrees, but some people believe 80 degrees to be the most comfortable water temperature for a pool. The sun will heat an outdoor pool, but without a pool heater, the swimming season will be over while the weather is still relatively warm. A pool heater can add to your swimming season, helping you get the most out of your investment.

Regardless of what type of pool heater you choose, you should use it in conjunction with a pool cover. Just like a lid on a stock pot, the pool cover helps hold in heat, making the heating process more efficient. In fact, an insulating pool cover can drastically reduce heat loss, keeping your energy bills within reason.

Gas pool heaters are quite popular. They use LP gas, and are less expensive than electric systems and less expensive to operate. Where LP is not available, there are oil fired pool heaters.

Electric pool heat pumps are more expensive, but they have their advantages, too. The general consensus is that electric pumps are more expensive to buy, but less expensive to run than gas.

Solar pool heaters can be an excellent choice in some climates. There are drawbacks, such as the initial investment. For ideal heating, the solar collector should be the same square footage as the pool’s surface area. A lot of houses don’t have that kind of space. Another disadvantage is that an electric pool pump is needed to pump the pool water to the solar panels, then pump the warmed water back into the pool.

The key to efficient solar heating is running it continuously on hot, bright days. Then, on cooler days, turn the valve off that goes to the solar panels, or else it will cool instead of heat. The use of a pool cover maximized efficiency of this method.

Automatic Air-Flow Heater. Fan forced heat. Heat regulator adjusts heat output as the temperature changes. Self adjusting wattage maximizes energy savings. Uses only 750 watts to maintain comfort. Space saving design can be placed at the wall. Illuminated power switch.

Water Heaters Repair & Problems Solving Guide

When you need to repair your water heater and you have forgotten where you put your warranty or manual, it helps to have some tips to guide you along the way. This guide assumes that the hot water heaters were properly installed and were operating correctly before any problems developed. It will be applicable to most brands of water heater troubleshooting like Takagi, Rudd, Bosch, RV, Rinnai or GE water heaters.

Common electric hot waters heater problems and repairs

Warning: Your electric water heater is a 240 volt appliance. The shock it can produce can be fatal. Turn off the power at the service panel before beginning work. Be sure to label the service panel with tape that will alert family members you are working on the electricity.

Problem: Not enough hot water

Thermostat may be set too low, increase temperature. Or there is sediment in the tank, try draining it. The thermostat or heating element may have failed and requires replacement or the dip tube may be damaged.

Problem: No hot water

Check the circuit breaker or fuse box. High temperature limit switch (ECO – Energy Cut Off) may have tripped. Determine if a problem exists and reset the switch. Upper thermostat may have failed and requires replacement or heating element may have failed and requires replacement.

Problem: Tank is leaking

Determine if the leak is from pipes or relief valves. Many water heaters use a low quality valve which can be difficult to close tightly. Use slip joint pliers to turn the valve all the way closed. Caution: Too much force may snap the valve off. If the valve has failed, replacement is required.

Problem: Hot Water Heater is noisy

Scale can build up on the heating elements causing all sorts of noises to occur while heating. Try removing the heating elements and either clean or replace them. Low water pressure can also results in spot boiling or voltage exceeds heating element’s rating.

Problem: Dirty water

Drain and flush the tank. Doing this regularly will extend the life of your electric water heater. If the drain valve leaks, tighten or replace.

Common gas hot water heaters problems and repairs:

Warning: If you smell a gas odour, close the gas-shutoff value that supplies water to the heater. Open your door or windows to ventilate the room and call the gas company immediately.

Problem: Not enough hot water

Thermostat may be set too low, increase temperature. Or if there is sediment in the tank, try draining it. Water heater is too small, and needed to be replaced with larger capacity model. Or it could be due to low gas pressure, so check with utility company.

Problem: Water leaks

Operate the pressure relief value. Many water heaters use a low quality valve which can be difficult to close tightly. Use slip joint pliers to turn the valve all the way closed. Caution: Too much force may snap the valve off. If leak continues and the temperature is okay, replace the value.

Problem: Pilot light will not stay lit

Check that the thermocouple is securely screwed into the thermostat assembly. The thermocouple may have failed and requires replacement. There may be air or dirt in the gas line or pilot line or clean the orifice which may be clogged. Inadequate combustion air may cause a water heater to shut down for safety reasons.

Problem: Water is too hot

Check and reset temperature control. If too high, have the thermostat professionally serviced.

Problem: Condensation on tank

Cold water entering the tank can result in external condensation. Ventilation may be inadequate. Replacement with a larger tank may help.

In Summary and to Take Note:

If you are still unsure of what to do, make sure you call the respective manufacturer for instructions or your local repair guy.

This compact heater will heat you up in the tightest of spaces. It provides intense directional flow of heat due to the ceramic heating element and large grille, which provides better circulation. You can customize your heating needs with the adjustable thermostat and two heat settings; choose the high setting for 1500 watts or the low setting for 825 watts. Its versatility will save you money; use the heater year-round by operating the fan without heat for summer ventilation. You can also easily select and maintain your desired level of comfort using the adjustable thermostat. You’ll never need to worry about overheating with this heater because it has a safety thermal cut-off; if the unit becomes too warm, it will automatically turn off.

How to Find the Best Far Infrared Heaters

Deciding to build your own infrared sauna is a great step toward proactively managing and promoting your own good health. However, careful research is still necessary. There are lots of options when it comes to buying a far infrared heater for your sauna, and not all types are created equal.

To choose the best far infrared heating element, you need to first take a look at the electromagnetic spectrum. All types of light (both visible and invisible) are organized by wavelength on what is known as the electromagnetic spectrum. As we move from visible light to longer wavelengths of light, we see infrared radiation.

Not many people know that infrared is actually divided into three different types: near infrared, mid infrared, and far infrared. The boundaries between each are a little fuzzy and really depend on the method used to measure wavelength. However, the divisions are there. In regard to saunas, far infrared radiation produces the strongest infrared benefits because its wavelength is the shortest of the three.

Traditional saunas rely on processes of convection and conduction to work. That means that they heat up the air (convection) which in turn heats our skin (conduction) as we sit inside the sauna. But infrared doesn’t rely on hot air at all. Its direct warming action allows infrared rays to directly work on our bodies without going through the medium of hot air. Infrared rays are similar to sunlight (but without the harmful action of UV rays).

This means that infrared sauna heaters can work at a lower surface temperature than traditional sauna heaters. In addition, they are more energy efficient and cheaper to operate. Most far infrared heaters are able to plug into a standard outlet. However, some larger models will require a special dedicated 15 to 20 amp plug, which must be installed by an electrician. So if you are looking to buy heaters for your infrared sauna, make sure of the hardware you will need to operate it before making a decision.

Infrared heaters look quite different from the traditional heating elements we’ve come to expect to see in saunas. They look more like sheets or plates than anything else. They are very thin and flat. Infrared radiation requires a large surface area in order to work effectively, so the bigger the better with infrared sauna heaters. Some heaters comes in the form of incoloy rods instead of plates, but they are not a good choice as their small surface area will compromise their ability to radiate infrared properly.

Most infrared heating elements are constructed with carbon fibers or ceramic materials. Finding tables of emissivity (an object’s ability to produce infrared radiation) is helpful in evaluating the different materials available. Ceramic heaters have the highest emissivity value. Not incidentally, they are the only heaters that are able to emit a truly far infrared radiation, instead of just near or mid infrared radiation. For users who want the best infrared sauna experience, ceramic would be the wisest choice.

Doing your homework is absolutely necessary when choosing a far infrared heater for your sauna. In general, ceramic heaters will be the best, but you always want to inquire about the emissivity of the specific model you are considering buying. Also remember that you want to cover a large surface area with your heaters and know what type of electrical outlet you’ll need for successful operation. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. After all, the quality of the heater you purchase will determine the quality of infrared sauna experience you’ll have in the future. So you have the right to make an informed choice!

EdenPure Portable Quartz Heaters – What’s Not to Like?

Before I tell you what’s not to like about the Edenpure quartz infrared heater, I’d like to spend a minute telling you what I do like, and how it works.

How the EdenPure Works

At the heart of these infrared heaters are the quartz bulbs. Similar to incandescent lamps, quartz bulbs are formed by enclosing a tungsten resistance wire within a high purity quartz sheath. They provide even, non drying floor to ceiling heat and, according to the manufacturer, reduce positive ions in the atmosphere responsible for many respiratory problems. The bulbs are rated to last 5,000-7,000 hours and cost around each to replace.

The EdenPure/SunTwin heaters are offered in 3 sizes: 500, 1,000, and 1,500 watt and the unit model numbers coincide with the heat output in watts. So a Suntwin 1500 Elite produces 1,500 watts. The heaters are thermostatically controlled, equipped with a circuit breaker, and have a 1 year warranty.

What I Do Like About the EdenPure Quartz Infrared Heater

It has a cool to the touch exterior and, unlike some other heaters, doesn’t have glowing red wires or an exposed fan. This is a big plus if you have kids and/or pets.

Despite the complaints some consumers have with it, I haven’t found one that is health or safety related.

What’s Not to Like

The #1 complaint of consumers who have actually purchased the heater comes down to this: Too little heat for too much money. Putting aside the cost factor for a moment, I’ll address the “too little heat” complaint first.

Too Little Heat

The results you get from a 1,500 watt heater, EdenPure or otherwise, depends on how it’s being used. Bear in mind, a 1,500 watt heater is the equivalent of only 5,000 Btus. This is minuscule compared to a typical 65,000 btu oil or gas fired furnace.

If you’re depending on a 1,500 watt heater as your only heat source, it will heat only 150 – 200 square feet depending on how well your home is insulated, obstructions to the flow of heat, such as walls, and the outside temperature.

Here’s the basic “rule of thumb” formula for calculating space heater capacity:

Watts/10 = heated space in square feet. Or: 1,500/10 = 150.

However, if you use a space heater to supplement your existing heating system by turning back the thermostat and letting the space heater pick up the slack, you could increase the effective heating range of a 1,500 watt heater to 600 square feet.

Too Much Money

I chalk this up to what I call the “furniture factor.” You can either buy a space heater that looks like a space heater, or one that complements your decor and doubles as an end table.

An even better example of the “furniture factor” is the electric fireplace. No matter which electric fireplace you look at, they all have the same 1,500 watt heater. Yet, depending on the design of the mantel piece, you could easily spend 2 or 3 times more on an electric fireplace than an EdenPure quartz infrared heater.

The difference is this: Most people who buy an electric fireplace are looking for furniture, but everyone who buys an EdenPure portable heater is looking for heat.
