Lower Water Heater Temperature to Save Money and Save Energy

Every water heater I’ve ever seen had the temperature set way too hot. Why? Because no plumber (or hotel clerk) wants to hear a customer complain that there isn’t enough hot water, so they always set it on the “far, far too hot” side, just to be absolutely sure. They really don’t care if you waste a lot of money every day while running the risk of burning your guests, children, the elderly or anyone who’s absent-minded for a moment. But it’s very easy for you to remedy, even if you’ve never so much as looked at your water heater.

The cost? About two minutes of your time. The savings? Money, every day, from now on. Some local zoning laws make it illegal to supply water that’s too hot (over 120 degrees) and scalding people is the reason. If you can adjust the thermostat on your furnace or air conditioner, it’s a safe bet you can adjust the thermostat on your hot water heater.

Leaving your water tank set too hot wastes energy (and money) every minute of every day, along with the risk of someone getting burned. Since a water heater is just about the most energy inefficient appliance in any modern home, and right near the top of the list for overall energy consumption, correcting the temperature can give you the biggest bang for your buck for saving money and energy.

Some people want the hottest possible water for laundry. They’ll never know the difference. Many decades ago, people scalded dishes washed with lye to remove diseases like cholera and TB that have long since disappeared.

Some people want the hottest possible water for their automatic dishwasher to get dishes clean, and that’s OK. Dishwashers have a heating element that you can see in the bottom of the cabinet. It looks just like the heating element in the bottom of an electric stove. Your dishwasher has a setting that lets you choose to use it or not for heating up the water — it’s your call. Bringing 120 degree water up to 180 degrees isn’t much harder than raising 160 degree water to 180, since there’s very little water in the dishwasher. If you open it up while it’s washing you’ll see just a few inches of water in the bottom.

But raising the temperature of 40 gallons of water in your water heater costs far more, and you’re paying to keep it overheated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. A lot of that extra heat just leaks through the side of the tank, wasting even more money and energy, especially in the summer when your air conditioner has to remove all that extra heat. You’re paying to create the extra heat, then paying even more to get rid of it!

You’ll find it easy to tell if your water heater is set too high. Just run the hot water from a tap and see if it gets so hot you can’t comfortably keep your hand under it (you probably already know the answer to this one). “Comfortably hot” works out to be about 120 degrees Fahrenheit, or 50 degrees Celsius. Most are set between 150 and 170 degrees.

If it’s too hot, find your hot water tank. If your tank has a big round vent at the top with a sheet metal tube that goes to the chimney, and also has a hard metal (gas) pipe going into a box hung near the bottom of the tank, it’s fired with natural gas or propane. This type is VERY easy to adjust.

If it has heavy electrical wires running to it and there is no vent (it’s just flat across the top), it’s an electric water heater. The instructions for setting both are basically the same, but the electric heater has its thermostat under a cover.

Next, if it’s a gas heater, find the square-ish control box near the bottom, just above a metal inspection plate that covers the gas burner and pilot lamp. The control box has two round knobs. One is to turn the pilot lamp on, off, or light the pilot — leave that knob alone.

A larger knob is marked Hot, Warm (and maybe Vacation, which turns the burner off while leaving the pilot lamp lit). This large knob sets the temperature, and it’s the one we want to change.

Study the markings on the large knob, and you’ll see it works much like the volume control knob on an old radio. You won’t find actual temperature markings (thus the plumber’s quandary of where to set it). Instead, you’ll just find some tick marks between Warm and Hot. Since you want to turn the temperature down, move the knob just a little bit so Warm moves closer to the top.

You just started saving money and energy. Now comes the fun part . . .

Wait one day. I mean it. Longer is OK.

This gives everything a chance to settle down and stabilize. Since the gas burner cycles off and on during the day (and all night) the temperature can vary by 5 or 10 degrees just depending on when you test it. Your furnace or A/C makes a difference in the air temperature in just a few minutes, but water heaters don’t change the water temp that fast.

After waiting a day, test your hand under the tap again. If it’s still too hot, turn the knob down just a little bit more. Move the knob only a little each time because you don’t want complaints from the family about running out of hot water while someone’s taking a shower if you set it too low, and it takes a day or so for your new setting to actually make a difference.

If you set it too low, you can always turn it back up just a bit. No harm done. But making large, wild swings will just confuse you. Slow and easy works every time.

If you have an electric water heater, you should always be alert — it has 220 volts of electric power running it. If you’re the least bit squeamish, just find the house’s circuit breaker box and look for the ganged (double) breakers. There’s usually one at the top (a ganged pair marked 100) for the ‘main’ (the entire house), and below that, some ganged pairs of 30′s for an electric dryer, an electric stove and the electric water heater. The rest are smaller 20 and 15 amp breakers for lights, outlets, furnace, etc.

If you can’t determine which is which (stove or water heater or dryer) flip one of them off and check to see which appliance stops working. Once you’ve learned which is which, label them on the numbered index card on the circuit breaker box door. These assignments won’t change, so don’t worry about having to erase them later. The big appliances use ganged pairs because the 220 volt power going to them is actually provided by a pair of ordinary 110 volt wires, for a total of 220 volts. There’s one breaker for each 110 volt line, but they have to be switched as a pair to do their job — if one pops, they both turn off.

Once you’ve found the ganged breaker for the water heater, just switch it off. That will turn off the electricity to the hot water tank. Next, on the side of the water heater itself, you’ll find one or two inspection panels with screws holding them down. Remove the screws on the top panel (if there are two). Barely poking out through the insulation, you’ll find a small control that may need a flat head screwdriver to adjust it. You may also see insulated wires going into it. Don’t bother the wires, especially if you’ve chosen to leave the power turned on at the circuit breaker box. Just turn the adjuster slightly lower. Return the cover and turn the power back on at the breaker box. Wait a day and test the temperature.

Repeat your small adjustments as needed until you get a temperature that just starts to become less uncomfortable. Then remind the family they don’t need to run the shower full-blast to get clean, and you’re well on your way to saving lots of money and energy.

The money you used to spend on raising the temperature higher was completely wasted, since you had to add cold water to make it tolerable. And no more worries about small children or visitors burning themselves.

Infrared Heater – Save on Your Energy Bill

Do you need an additional heater, to complement your central heating system? Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense to turn up the temperature in the entire house so you can warm up one room you are in. It is much better to use an additional heater. Infrared heater can be of great help. Find out what are the benefits of infrared heaters comparable to other heaters.

Infrared heater efficiency

Most heaters work by warming the air in the room. People in the room are warmed by the air. Not only this wastes energy on warming up the air, but also you don’t feel the benefits of the heater as soon as it is switched on. It might take several minutes for a room to warm up. Infrared heaters work differently. They don’t heat up the air it heats objects that are directly in its path. As a result people in the area are warmed directly by the heater and not by the air.

This principle makes infrared heaters very energy efficient. Another advantage is that you don’t have to turn the heater on half an hour or hour in advance to pre-heat the room. You feel the warmth immediately.

Types of infrared heaters

Here are the most popular types of infrared heaters:

- Metal-sheathed tubular heaters

- Quartz tubes

- Quartz lamps

- Gas fired catalytic

- Flat-faced panels

- Ceramic emitters

Often people are worried that infrared heaters are not safe. There is really no need to worry. Most modern infrared heaters have a protective sheath to cover the heating elements. The cover is usually made of metal such as aluminum, brass, copper, iron or stainless steel. Blowing curtains won’t become a fire hazard with an infrared heater. Most home models are pretty safe, but of course children shouldn’t be allowed to play with the heating unit.

Another advantage is that infrared heater doesn’t make the air in the room dry. The principle of its work is very similar to the way sun warms us on a bright day.

You can find indoor infrared heaters as well as outdoor and patio heaters. The source of fuel can be different, infrared heater can run off electricity, natural gas or propane.

More tips for efficient heating

Using an additional infrared heater can save you a great deal on your energy bill. But there is more you can do. First, check for drafts and boost the insulation. At the beginning of winter, make sure that window caulking and storm windows are in good shape. You should also check thermostats and install timers for your central heating.

You will need an additional heater to supplement the central heating? Sometimes it is simply not sensible to turn the temperature throughout the house, so you can warm up a room you are in. It's much better to use an additional heater. Infrared heating can be a big help. Find out what are the benefits of infrared emitters compared with other heaters.

Infrared heating efficiency

Most heaters work by heating the air in the room.People in the room are warmed by the air. Not only does this waste energy to the heating of the air, but also you do not feel the benefits of heating when it is turned on. It may take several minutes for a room to warm up. Infrared heaters work differently. Do not heat the air heats up, it put objects directly in the path. As a result, people in the region are not directly heated by the heater and through the air.

This principle makes infrared heaters very energyto design more efficient. Another advantage is that you are not on the heater for a half hour or hour in advance again from heat in the room. You feel the warmth immediately.

Types of infrared emitters

Here are the most popular types of infrared emitters:

– Metal-sheathed tubular heating elements

– Quartz tube

– Crystal Lamps

– Gas-fired catalytic

– Flat-faced panels

– Ceramic heating elements

Often people are concerned that infrared heaters are not safe. There's really no reason for concern. Most modern infrared heaters have a protective covering to cover the radiator. The lid is usually made of metal such as aluminum, brass, copper, iron or steel. Blowing curtains will not become a fire hazard with an infrared heater. Most home models are pretty sure, but of course children should not be allowed to be played, the heating device.

Another advantage is that infrared heating makes the air in the room dry. TheBasic principle of its work is very similar to the sun warms us on a sunny day.

You can find indoor infrared emitter to both outdoor and patio heaters. The source of fuel may be different to infrared heater take-off run electricity, natural gas or propane.

More tips for efficient heating

Using an additional infrared heater, you save a lot on your electricity bill. But there's more you can do. First, check for drafts, and improving insulation. InBeginning of winter, make sure that window caulking and storm windows are in good shape. You should also check thermostats and install timers for your central heating.

Energy efficient space heaters are one of the best ways to lower your heating bills cheaper. According to U.S. government statistics, the average American spends $ 1,900 per year for home energy, almost half goes to heating and cooling. Space heaters can lower the bill. Here's how to make the best of an energy-efficient space heater.

You first need to be ready, lower the heat throughout the house and use the heater for the preferred room. Otherwise,They will only increase your electric bill. This often works well when an older person and want extra heat, or it is an area of the house that the family gathered after meals.

Choices are endless. For this discussion we are interested and transferability of the only portable devices are electric. Portable electric heaters convert electricity by radiant heat or convection heat methods.

Heaters usually look reminiscent of the old-fashioned steamRadiator. They are usually cooler will feel, but heat is an individual or nearby objects quite quickly. They are not necessarily the best choice for heating an entire room. It will take some time for them to heat a whole room. Convection type heaters have tape or wire heating elements. They are a better choice for heating large areas quickly.

In any case, you should buy something that is safe. Look for the UL listing. Radiant style heaters generally have a lower chanceof burning or someone causing safety issues such as the wire elements can be very hot in convection style heaters. Also, look for the automatic temperature control, so the room does not change temperature between day and night and waste additional energy. Take a look at some of the individual species to determine what best fits your needs.
