Why Is My Water Heater Not Working?

A water heater pilot light is the little blue flame at the bottom of the heater that lights the burner when your water heater needs to heat water. The heater will not heat water if the pilot goes out and it will have to be relit.

In an older heater (prior to 2002) you are able to relight the pilot with a match or lighter. Water heaters have changed in recent years to comply with new laws to prevent fires and explosions. The reason for the new regulations is because residents that don’t have basements in their homes usually have their heater located in the garage. That creates a problem when a heater with an open flame is located near lawn equipment and cans of gasoline. The area at the bottom of the heater is now completely enclosed and the only way to relight the pilot is with a igniter that is located on the gas valve.

There are a few causes of a pilot light going out. The first cause may be a thermocouple failing. Very simply put the thermocouple sends the message to the burner that the pilot is lit. If the thermocouple fails the burner won’t light and the pilot will go out. In an old water heater (prior to 2002) you are able to replace the thermocouple and hopefully be back in business.

The next issue that you need to consider is the fresh air intake. If you have a traditionally vented heater (i.e. a heater that is gravity vented through a chimney in your home) it is possible that a down draft is occurring due to the fresh air intake being plugged. If the Fresh air intake vents at the base of the heater are plugged with debris the heater may pull its fresh air through the chimney vent. This may cause the pilot flame to be extinguished. To solve this issue you need to clean your air intake vents at the base of the heater and relight the pilot.

Because of these new restrictions water heater manufacturers had to come up with new ways of getting fresh air to the flame while not allowing the possibility of having a fire start or having an explosion. This created issues with pilot lights not staying lit. Most manufactures have some kind of venting that is located at the bottom of the heater. This venting can become plugged with debris and not allow combustion air to be taken in to keep a flame lit.

Adding to the problem is debris that may get sucked in to the heater itself. Water heaters used to have combustion air coming in from all sides. This design allowed for a more than adequate air supply to enter the heater keeping the flame and burner lit. With the new heaters the size of the air ports for fresh combustion air to enter the heater have restricted the air supply. The amount of air needed is the same however the size of the hole that the air has to enter has been choked down causing a vacuum effect. This causes debris to enter into the heater itself and plug screen that is located in the heater that was added as a safety shield to prevent any flames from escaping the heater. If this occurs it is possible, although difficult, to blow out the debris.

Gas Heater Service and Safety – Straight Talk

Gas heaters should be installed by professionals as well as being regularly maintained. A hazardous heating unit may cause a fire or pollute your house with dangerous toxins such as high levels of carbon monoxide.

Servicing your heater frequently and using it according to the manufacturer’s specifications will ensure it operates both safely and economically.

How Often Should a Heater be Serviced?

A gas heater service by an expert is recommended every two years. It’s also recommended to do this just before winter and heavy use of the heater. Some manufacturers suggest servicing even more frequently, so check your unit’s manual.

For those who have ducted heating system, read the manual or get in touch with the product manufacturer to determine if specialised duct cleaning is essential.

What Cleaning or Maintenance Can I Do Myself?

There are a few things you can do yourself to maintain your heater.

Have a look at the accessible filters and clean as necessary. The user manual should provide details

Cleaning fans should be done once a year to ensure smooth operation. Again the user manual should provide details of what is possible.

Trouble Signs

If your heater is showing any of the following signs of trouble, you should call an expert for gas heater repairs immediately.

The walls next to the heater become too hot to touch comfortably

Signs of staining of the walls or heater panels due to intense heat

The heater flame is very sooty, smoky or yellowish

The pilot light often goes out. Or it makes loud noises when lighting

There is a gas odour in the room and/or building

Someone complaining of not feeling so well with symptoms such as exhaustion, difficulty breathing, severe headaches, lightheadedness, nausea or vomiting, weakness, confusion or chest pain. This can be caused by carbon monoxide from a defective gas heater. If this happens, turn off the heater, open all windows and leave the building immediately. Consult your doctor to determine if these symptoms were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.

Best Tips for Using a Gas Heater

Always allow for fresh air to enter the room

Place a shield around the heater to protect from burning, especially young children

Do not dry clothes or objects by placing them on the heater due to fire risk

Do not use in rooms with inadequate ventilation or where people sleep

Do not store solvents or pressurized cans near a gas heater, even when off.

Do not use heaters designed for outdoor use indoors and visa versa.

Always use heaters for the purpose they were built as specified in the instruction manual.

When using outdoor patio style heaters, always ensure the unit is secured very tightly in case of high wind or other factors

Commercial Water Heater – Considering All of Your Requirements

Looking into a commercial water heater? Then you have a few things that you need to consider. Take a look at these areas to avoid making a mistake with the wrong unit.

The first criteria is for fuel source. You will have to decide if the unit will run off of oil, gas or electricity. This is especially important not only in the initial cost, but in the reoccurring operating expenses. Since gas prices have a tendency to fluctuate so much then your monthly expense may not warrant a particular type of unit. You will also need to take into consideration the peak performance cost, which is the most expensive time of the month or day that the unit will be running. This may cause your running costs to exceed more than you are planning to spend.

Another area is how large of a unit will be needed. In this case, you can make a severe mistake if you do not once again consider peak usage. The reason is because these units can only heat at a certain rate. Hot water is released from the top of the unit while cold water is injected from the bottom. The unit then works to not only maintain the hot liquid already inside, but the raise the temperature of the new water. If your unit is too small then it will never catch up and inevitably wear out much sooner than anticipated.

This is an exceptionally important factor in certain instances, such as a hotel. The consumption of hot water needed can fluctuate quite dramatically depending on the number of visitors. Since these devices use a tremendous amount of energy to maintain a constant supply they also have to exert even more energy when heating more water. This can become rather costly in a short period of time.

Manufacturers are coming to our aid by developing more efficient units that help keep the cost at a reasonable level. These devices utilize the Energy Factor rating to determine their efficiency. Now commercial water heaters are rated on how well they conserve energy, the amount expended to maintain levels of hot water and the transference of energy to warming the water.

Are Propane Heaters Safe for Indoor Use?

As with any type of gas heater threes always questions regarding health and safety when they are used inside the home for a long time basis. You may or may not be aware of the many concerns government legislators and activists have brought up regarding the use of gas heaters in confined spaces, especially those that are fuelled by propane.

Issues and concerns that present in the past do not provide cause for concern in this day and age with many manufacturers integrating the latest features to insure that if you purchase a propane heater for indoor use it will bring no harm. Period.

Some of the latest features to be included in the new generation of propane heaters include oxygen depletion sensors and automatic valve cut off mechanisms. As propane fuelled heaters are inexpensive to run and the fuel source can be readily purchased from many large retailers there really is no reason to invest in one of these great heaters. For outdoor use you could purchase one of many portable variations that are not only safe for outside use but can be used in the home for a short term basis making them great value for money compared to other types available.

It’s important to remember that no matter what type of heating system you have, whether operated via natural gas or propane that you follow the safety guidelines advised by manufactures to insure you and your families safety. Larger units such as the many propane fireplaces and stoves available for purchase need careful monitoring and consistent maintenance to insure they not only last a life time but bring no harm to your health.

For a heater solution that is really efficient then perhaps one of many fan operated units would suit you best that help in radiating heat around your living area fast and efficiently or perhaps a radiant variant whereby a heating element warms the air around you which results in a slow warming of any vicinity.

Many manufactures such as Delonghi and Mr Heater include lifetime warranty with their products meaning you never have to worry about a fault developing. If you want to save cash this winter then I think it’s time you got yourself a propane heater. Think about it, it makes sense right?

Water Heaters and Thermal Expansion – Does Your Water Heater Need a Thermal Expansion Tank?

Water Heaters: Friend or Foe?

Your Water Heater is one of the most expensive and important parts of your plumbing system. Without one, life just would not be the same. Imagine cold showers every day! But did you know that your water heater could be causing a problem in your pipes?

Hot Water Expands

Hot water heaters do their job by using either an electric heating element or a gas burner to heat cold water and make it hot. The problem is that water expands when it is heated. This is called “Thermal Expansion”.

An Extra Half Gallon Of Water

Due to Thermal Expansion, a regular 40 gallon hot water heater creates about an extra half gallon of water in the pipes while heating water from 70 degrees to 120 degrees. If the extra water doesn’t have anywhere to go it causes the pressure in the pipes to go up, sometimes way up.

A Closed System Creates The Problem

If you have a “Closed System”, meaning there is a check valve or “Backflow Preventer” on the incoming water line, the extra water volume caused by thermal expansion has nowhere to go. This means that the pressure in your pipes can get too high, possibly causing problems.

Too Much Pressure Is Bad

If your pressure gets too high because of thermal expansion it can cause several problems. One of the main issues is that your T and P Relief Valve on the water heater can start to drip or run. This valve is designed to release pressure if it gets up to 150 psi. The problem is that it’s really a safety valve and isn’t designed to open and close a lot. Too much could cause it to fail.

Thermal Expansion Can Cause Running Toilets

Another symptom of thermal expansion problems is a toilet that keeps running or kicking on from time to time. This is caused by the excess pressure overcoming the float on the fill valve, allowing water to run into the tank. Over time this can cause the fill valve to stop working and make it run constantly.

A Thermal Expansion Tank Will Solve These Problems

If you are experiencing either of these problems, or if you are just replacing your water heater, it is a good idea to install a Thermal Expansion Tank. This is a small tank with an air bladder inside that is installed in the cold water pipe near the water heater. When the water heater comes on and starts heating, the extra water that is created is forced into the tank and compresses the air bladder. As the water cools, or a faucet is opened, the bladder pushes the extra water back out of the tank,

A Fairly Simple Job

Installing a Thermal Expansion Tank is a fairly simple job. You just need to turn the main water off, install a tee and female adapter in the cold water pipe near the water heater and then screw the Expansion Tank into the adapter. A few basic tools and a little knowledge and you can eliminate thermal expansion from your piping system.

Tips on Buying an Infrared Heater for Your Home

Due to the practical advantages of an infrared heater, it is fast becoming the heater of choice in many homes. This type of heater makes use of electromagnetic radiation when transferring energy or heat to a body or object of lower temperature. The heat produced is more concentrated and direct as it hits people, objects, and surface areas in a room.

How do infrared heaters work?

Compared to most types of standard heaters, an infrared heater does not work by heating the air in a room. This heater produces heat and directs this heat to people and objects found in the room, which results in faster heating. With traditional heaters, the heating effect is achieved by warming the air first. This process can be time-consuming and even expensive. Since heating takes time, more fuel is also consumed. An infrared heating device on the other hand heats up another body – objects, surfaces, people – directly. A few minutes after turning the heater on, you will be able to enjoy the warmth almost instantly.

How safe is an infrared heater?

These types of home heaters are one of the safest around since the heating elements are completely covered without compromising heating efficiency. The heating elements, which are responsible in emitting heat, are covered with copper, brass, steel or any other type of metal. Moreover the body of the heater is secured in a case and kept cool by a fan that also helps prevent overheating. This makes the heater safe to have around the home, even in rooms where there are children and pets.

Efficient and eco-friendly

Fuel powered home heaters normally work through combustion, which may emit harmful gases into the environment. Because infrared heaters do not go through the combustion process to create warmth, they are a cleaner, environmentally-friendly choice. People who are prone to dust allergies may also benefit from infrared heating. Unlike air heating systems that emit dust all over the room, these heaters deliver warmed, cleaner air, and doesn’t make use of fuels or emit combustion gases. Their ability to convert energy to heat also means you are getting a highly efficient home heating device. Many households are able to cut down on their electricity expenses significantly by using an infrared heater.

The Howard Berger infrared heater is a safe, efficient, and easy to use heater choice for the home. It comes with a remote control for easy manipulation and also features a backlit LCD display, washable air filter, and safety cut-off switch. Its whisper quiet operation ensures you efficient heating results without the unnecessary background noise, resulting in faster and even heating from day to night.

Ways to Install a PEX Tubing System

Installation of PEX plumbing systems should be carried out strictly according to the project in hand. Normally, PEX plumbing systems are installed by trained professionals with technical knowledge of the system. But if you want to install PEX plumbing systems on your own then there are certain things you would have to keep in mind before you set out to do the actual task of installing a full-fledged PEX plumbing system.

What is PEX?

Firstly, you have to know what PEX is. For the uninitiated, PEX is cross-linked polyethylene. These are often used for radiant heating purposes, but now these are also used extensively for hot and cold plumbing installations. PEX tubing and plumbing systems are easy to work with since they are quite flexible. This is one advantage PEX systems have over normal copper systems. Owing to its design, PEX is also more durable under temperature extremes and chemical attack. It is also highly resistant to creep deformation.

Steps to be followed while installing PEX:

Below is a simple step by step guideline on how to install such a plumbing system. Just follow these steps carefully and you will be able to install a PEX plumbing system at your home without the help of any technician. It will also save you some extra bucks.

Things required for installing a PEX Plumbing system:

PEX piping and fittings

PEX crimps

PEX manifold with ball valves

Nailing plates

PEX stub outs

Tools:

Hammer

Soldering machine

PEX cutting equipments

Straps

Hangars

Paddle bit

Crimp gauge

Right-angle drill

Step-1:

Slowly start drilling after you have placed the bit up to the stud. Increase your drilling speed as you move forward. While drilling, just make sure that each hole is at the same level so that the pipe can run parallel to the floor. Also drill through the sill plate and sub-floor for individual water lines.

Step-2:

After you are done with drilling, insert and run the water lines through those holes. In most cases, the water lines come through the floor. But in certain other cases, the lines may come through the wall studs. In those cases, make sure you drill the holes right at the center so that while hanging the board, the screw and nails of the board do not harm or damage the pipes in any way.

Step-3:

Pull the lines upwards through the holes on the sub-floor. Also, run the other end to the area where water will be coming into the home. Leave pout some extra pipes on both the ends. Now use the clamps and secure the lines to the joists. Make sure, you keep the hot and cold lines as far apart as possible to minimize heat transfer.

Step-4:

Now do the rough stub-outs for the sinks. You can use a right-angle drill or a paddle bit to carry out this task. Just make sure to cut-off the rough fitting cap and install finish valves after you put up the walls.

Step-5:

It is now time to install the crimps. For the perfect crimp set up, make sure the PEX is straight when you cut it. Now slide a crimp ring onto and then insert the pipe in the crimp fitting. Use slip-joint pliers to slide the crimp ring up. Do not do it with your fingers, or else you might hurt yourself while tightening the crimp ring. Make sure the crimp ring is 1/8 inches or 1/4 inches from the end of the pipe.

Step-6:

Now rough the lines to the fixtures. Do not solder around the PEX tubing or you might end up damaging the pipes. You should use a fitting called PEX 90. After it has cooled from soldering, you can fit it onto the PEX water line.

Step-7:

Position the valve in a way where they will face down when they are hung in their places. Solder them to their positions.

Step-8:

You can now pull up the water lines from the crawlspace and connect them to the manifold. Screw the top brackets to stud keeping them at eye level. Also install the bottom brackets to the manifold.

Step-9:

Now mark all the holes with a nail and start drilling them. Just make sure you do not damage the manifold while you are doing your drilling work. Put the manifold on the ground after you have finished you drilling work.

Step-10:

Now you can attach the PEX ball valves to the manifold. Screw every valve onto its port properly. Get one of the lines and pull it up to the valve to make sure it fits properly. This type of arrangement will mean that each fixture will have its own shut-off valve.

Step-11:

After you are done with fitting the ball valves, you can now pull up the PEX tubing from the crawlspace and attach them at their places.

A great choice for a silent radiant heater that provides instant heat for objects instead of the air. Does not stir up dust or burn oxygen with oscillation function that heats more objects in the room. Features a low temperature surface to reduce the risk of burns and overheat and tip-over safety protection. A 2-hour auto-off timer for your convenience.

What Are the Different Guidelines For Choosing the Right Heater for Your Home

You first need to know the two types of heaters available in the market. Classified according to the type of energy used in order for them to work, there are two main types of heaters, electric and non electric heaters. Electric heaters come in various types, like panel heater, electric wall heater and electric bathroom heater.

Types of Heaters

As the name suggests, electric heaters utilizes electricity in order for them to function. They come in different kinds, electric wall heater, panel heater and bathroom electric heater. Widely used for heating properties during the cold months, these types of heaters are found to be highly efficient and safe to use. Since they do not use any combustion fuels, they are also considered to be environmentally friendly. These types of heaters are available in fixed and portable styles. Non electric heaters are those that use other forms of energy to make them work. They are deemed more appropriate for outdoor use such as in the patio or in the garden

Panel Heater

Whether you want to heat a whole room or just a small part of the room, you can find a panel heater that will meet your requirements. These are heaters that come in forced air systems using electricity, infrared systems or natural gas forced air systems. The decision regarding which one to choose should be made after looking at your budget and the costs of using each kind of heater.

Some of these panel heaters are small enough to be moved around and plugged into any electrical socket and are great as space heaters, perfect for a room that is too cold and needs to be warmed up. But these wouldn’t be as effective in a large room, so for that you should consider a natural gas line heater or one that uses propane.

The best thing about panel heaters is that you can set a timer for how long you want it to heat the room. You can also change the temperature, thus saving power at times when you don’t need the heating as much. These can be used anywhere in the house and, since they come in different sizes, can be very affordable.

Panel heaters, however, do require a bit more maintenance than other kinds. They have to be cleaned once a year, which you should get done by a professional.

Electric Wall Heater

Electric wall heaters have high voltage electricity running through them, which when run through a resistor, converts the energy to heat. The metal that is wrapped around the resistor heats the area the heater is in. These heaters use convection which means they warm the air next to them first and as this air moves upwards, the new air that comes into the heater gets warmed.

When opting for an electric wall heater, you should choose one that has no open coil but instead has a tubular, finned tubular or plate finned elements. Make sure that its lubrication is also permanent and the motor is totally enclosed for safety. It should also have a power coated finish, a disconnect switch and a fan delay where heating up the entire room is done efficiently.

These are extremely portable and can be picked up at any time and taken to a different room when needed.

Electric Bathroom Heater

Bathroom heaters are an absolute necessity since bathrooms can get very cold in the winters. You can get a wall mounted heater for your bathroom for the most efficient use of space. Radiant electric bathroom heaters are very common and are especially made for use in the bathroom. They come in a variety of styles and sizes so they can be fitted into any bathroom. You can also opt for a regular overhead heater in your bathroom if you want.

Bathroom heaters not only heat the bathroom but will also reduce humidity. This reduces the amount of mould that is that is able to grow in the tiles. Mildew is also reduced because of this lack of humidity.

Buying a heater for your home is no easy task since there are a lot of varieties. Hopefully you will be able to understand how heaters like the electric wall heater, bathroom electric heater and electric panel heater work and which one you should get for which need.
